The Vanish is Wahl's finishing shaver, built for the last five minutes of a cut. Twin foil cartridges sit in a head where each cutter bar is suspended independently, so both foils follow the shape of the jaw, the neckline and the back of the head rather than skipping over them. That's what produces a genuinely clean finish on contours, and it's the difference between a shaver that works on a flat cheek and one that works everywhere.

The foils are coated in gold-coloured titanium nitride and cut close enough to mimic a razor without the burn or the bumps. A rotary DC motor runs at 7600 RPM. At 181g with moulded finger grips down the side, it stays controllable through detail work.

Cord or cordless, with a 45-minute charge giving two hours of running. Three LEDs act as a fuel gauge so you always know where you stand, and a travel lock stops the shaver waking up in your bag.

How to Use

Charging

Connect the power cord to the shaver first, then to the outlet. While charging, the LEDs flash in a sweeping pattern, then turn solid as the battery fills — one solid LED with two flashing means at least 30%, two solid means at least 60%, and all three solid means fully charged.

Give the shaver one full charge before relying on the fuel gauge. Until it has completed a full charge, all three LEDs flash during discharge rather than reading accurately.

Leaving the cord attached with the shaver switched off keeps the battery topped up.

Cordless use

A 45-minute charge gives around two hours of running. As the battery drains, the number of LEDs still lit shows roughly how much charge remains. When it's nearly empty the LEDs flash to tell you to recharge.

Corded use

Attach the transformer directly to the shaver. If the battery has run completely flat, let it charge for 1 minute with the shaver switched off before running it corded.

Travel lock

Hold the power button for 3 seconds — the motor stops and the LEDs flash three times. While locked, pressing the power button flashes the LEDs three times and the motor won't start. Unlock by holding the power button for 3 seconds again, or by connecting the charger.

Shaving

The foil is designed for hair 0.8mm or shorter. Let the foil glide over the skin and allow the shaver to do the work — pressing hard doesn't give a closer shave, and it damages the foil.

Cleaning the foil cartridges and cutter bars

Press the release button on the right side of the shaver and lift the foil head off. Loose material can be tapped out by knocking the housing gently against the sink. The foil is micro-thin with raised inner cutting edges — always handle it carefully.

To remove a cutter bar, grasp both sides and pull up. Brush away loose hair with the pre-shave brush, rinse the cutter bar assembly under warm water and dry it with a paper towel. To refit, line up the metal pin on the bottom of the cutter bar with the slot on the drive finger and snap it on.

To remove a foil cartridge, hold the foil head and push gently down on each side — the cartridge pops out. To refit, line it up from the bottom of the foil head and snap one side in, then the other; you'll hear it click when it's secure.

Always replace the foil head on the shaver before use.

When to replace

Foils and cutter bars are wear parts. If the shaver slows down or the foil starts feeling warm, the raised cutting edges have worn. Replace foils often and cutter bars periodically. A cutter bar should be straight — replace any that has bent.

• Reduce pressure when shaving close to the skin; too much pressure, a damaged foil or a bent cutter bar can cause skin injury
• Charge, use and store between 10°C and 40°C, and avoid direct sunlight — charging outside this range can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire
• Do not use outdoors, or while aerosol sprays are being used
• Never use solvents, scouring agents, bleach or benzene on the appliance
• Do not crush, disassemble, heat above 100°C, or incinerate — risk of fire, explosion or burns
• Do not modify, pierce, damage, disassemble, short-circuit, overcharge or reverse charge the battery
• If the battery is damaged or leaking, avoid contact with skin and eyes. If contact occurs, rinse well with water and seek medical care
• Do not attempt to remove the lithium-ion battery. Battery replacement must be carried out by Wahl or a qualified professional
• For use on human hair, beard hair and eyebrows only — use dedicated animal clippers for animal hair
• Do not carry the appliance by the mains cable, or pull on the cable to disconnect it
• Do not wind the cable around the appliance for storage
• Always switch off before storage, as vibration can make the appliance fall
• Do not dispose of the appliance or its lithium battery in household waste

Storage

Store dry, between 10°C and 40°C, out of direct sunlight. Use the travel lock when the shaver is going into a bag. Coil the cord loosely rather than winding it around the shaver.
